standards and best practices.

At its meeting of 6 February 2020, a FMRAC Framework for its Members on a Regulatory Approach to Physicians who Prescribe Opioids was unanimously approved by the Board of Directors.

The final English version is now posted under the Positions section

The purpose of the Framework is to provide recommendations and propose minimum regulatory standards to FMRAC’s members, i.e., the Medical Regulatory Authorities (MRAs) in Canada, to guide physicians who prescribe opioids to patients with pain and/or an opioid use disorder.

This Framework complements existing MRA policies and guidance to physicians and strives for pan-Canadian consistency in opioid prescribing. As FMRAC has no authority over its members, it is the discretion of the individual MRAs to adopt or adapt these recommendations as they deem appropriate and/or feasible.

The FMRAC Board also approved the sunsetting of the Working Group, having completed its mandate.

Special thanks are extended to members of the former national Working Group for their work in developing the document over the past two years: Dr. Karen Mazurek-CPSA (Chair), Dr. Karen Shaw (CPSS), Dr. Anna Ziomek (CPSM), Dr Yves Robert (CMQ), Dr. Marina Reinecke (CPSM) and Dr. Angela Carol (CPSO).
